The Poetry Games
A Duo Poetry Slam Themed after award-winning novel “The Hunger Games”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 29, 2013
THE SMITHSONIAN TEAMS WITH TOP DC AREA POET SHELLY BELL FOR THE “HUNGER GAMES” THEMED “POETRY GAMES” ON APRIL 6TH
Top DC Metropolitan area-based poet Shelly Bell intends to increase visibility of performance poetry by creating a poetry event in which wordsmiths can showcase their talent competitively at April 6th’s “Poetry Games” poetry slam at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art for a prize of $500. Born in North Carolina but currently residing in Alexandria, VA, Bell is an award-winning poet who is presently the host of Busboys and Poets’ Open Mic events, alongside having served as the Arts Commissioner for the City of Alexandria,VA, as well as currently working as the Director of the Seven City Art Society, LLC.
Conceptually, the “Poetry Games” slam is loosely themed after The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins’ 2008 New York Times Best Seller. The plot of the story centers around post-apocalyptic North America, and an annual event in which teenagers are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle to the death. Though far less macabre, April 6th does intend to be an incredibly action-packed event.
If unaware, a poetry slam is a competition in which performed poetry is judged by five members of the audience. Poets have three minutes to perform an original poem. The judges will then score the pieces anywhere from 0 to 10, evaluating such qualities as performance and content. The high and low scores of each performance are tossed, and the middle three are added giving the performer their score.
Poets from all over the country are encouraged to sign up for the two-person team slam. Details are currently available on Bell’s NEW website, http://www.regretnothingwriteeverything.com, as well as the event’s official Eventbrite page, http://thepoetrygames.eventbrite.com/.
The six-team, three-round event will feature Hunger Games-themed slam events. Two teams will be eliminated each round, with cumulative point totals from the first two rounds determining which team goes to the third round.
Alongside the excitement of the slam itself, event entertainment will be provided by nationally renowned and environmentally conscious “Green Violinist” Chelsey Green!
The winning team will receive $500, with a $20 registration fee per team which is ONLY for the purpose of locking in your place in the slam. The registration fee will be refunded after the event if able to compete.
